The mood is sad.

The room is empty or bare with only a few pieces of overturned furniture. It is dusty and uninhabited

Mr Frank finds his families belongings and cries. 

He also states the memories are too painful for him

We can tell there is a lot of tension in the annex.

The adults are bickering, Anne and her mother argue. Kraler asks if another man can join them which upsets some of the characters.

Anne wakes in the middle of the night from a nightmare. 

 

Dussel brought bad news at the end of scene 4. It is dark and quiet in the annex, the war continues as we hear soldiers and airplanes overhead. Margot has her bed separated by a sheet for privacy. When all the characters wake up they are instantly afraid and worried, some are even aggrevated or angry. The residents of the annex have been living in constant fear

 

Characters become fearful, anxious, tense because they hear a crash below. A thief was in the wharehouse and the families are worried they have been discovered.
