Acceptable answers: Historical Fiction or Realistic Fiction

Historical fiction presents a story set in the past, often during a significant time period. In historical fiction, the time period is an important part of the setting and often of the story itself. Historical fiction may include fictional characters, well-known historical figures or a mixture of the two. Authors of historical fiction usually pay close attention to the details of their stories (settings, clothing, dialogue, etc.) to ensure that they fit the time periods in which the narratives take place.

Realistic fiction is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting. These stories resemble real life, and fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people. Stories that are classified as realistic fiction have plots that highlight social or personal events or issues that mirror contemporary life, such as falling in love, marriage, finding a job, divorce, alcoholism, etc. They depict our world and our society.

1st-person

First person narrative is a point of view where the story is narrated by one character at a time. This character may be speaking about him or herself or sharing events that he or she is experiencing.

Arizona is described as dry and barren, meaning lifeless, so it is ironic that Mom starts creating more life.

Irony is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words. It may also be a situation that may end up in quite a different way than what is generally anticipated.

person vs. nature

The river (nature) had the potential to drown Emmett (person) had Hiram not rescued him.
