Biography
It provided a way to move goods from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes region.

The canal was finished in 1825

The fur trade began.

The main reason was to find a trade route to China.

The French explorers found a lot of beavers.
In France, there were not many beavers. Also, they needed the beaver furs to make beaver hats.
Exploration began around 1500.
They lived in wigwams.
We can learn about their beliefs.
There is a great spirit who helps them.
They wanted French goods (pots, knives and so on).
They are called missionaries.
They had to clear the land.

They had to build their houses out of the logs they cut down.

The Erie canal was built, so it was easier for people and goods to come here.
They thought it was a swamp land.
