#3 'Lay on, Macduff, / And damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!' Macbeth, Macbeth has decided to fight Macduff even though he no longer feels protected by the predictions of the witches.

Major Themes and Events
#1 The second time Macbeth goes to see the witches and they show him the apparitions, what is the first prediction he gets? Beware the Thane of Fife, Macduff.
#2 What two predictions do the appartitions/witches make that cause Macbeth to believe he can't be defeated? Birnam wood must move to Dunsinane Castle for Macbeth to be defeated, and he can't be harmed by any man born of woman.
#3 How does Birnam wood move to Dunsinane? Malcolm and his allies cut down thousands of branches and use them to disguise their number, so it looks like the wood is moving.
#4 Why does Malcolm lie and tell Macduff that he has terrible character flaws and can't be king? Malcolm wants to test Macduff and see if he really cares about Scotland and make sure Macduff is not working for Macbeth.
#5 Why is Macduff able to kill Macbeth? He was born by what we would call a c-section, which the apparitions consider different than being 'born of woman.'

#1 “For thy undaunted mettle should compose, / nothing but males.” Macbeth, Macbeth considers Lady Macbeth so tough, she should not have female children but instead only have males.
#2 “I have done no harm. But I remember now / I am in this earthly world, where to do harm / Is often laudable, to do good sometime / Accounted dangerous folly.” Lady Macduff, Lady Macduff realizes that in their world, doing evil is praised, doing good is considered silly.
#3 'Is this a dagger which I see before me, / The handle towards my hand? Come, let me clutch / thee.' Macbeth, before Macbeth goes to kill Duncan, he imagines that there is a dagger leading the way.
#4 'And yet the eighth appears, who bears a glass / Which shows me many more, and some I see / That two-fold balls and treble scepters carry: / Horrible sight. Now, I see, 'tis true, / For the blood-boltered Banquo smiles upon me, / And points at them for his.' Macbeth, the witches show Macbeth that Banquo's decendents will be kings. #1 Why is Hecat upset that the witches did not call her when they met Macbeth the first time? Hecat did not get the opportunity to show all her power, and she also thinks that Macbeth was not a good choice for the witches to talk to.
#2 'My lord is often thus, / And hath been from his youth. Pray you, keep seat. / The fit is momentary. Upon a thought / He will again be well. If much you note him, / You shall offend him and extend his passion.' Lady Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is attempting to cover up her husband's strange behavior while Macbeth panics over seeing Banquo's ghost.
#3 Give three examples of Macbeth being unable to be happy with what he has. Killing Duncan for the crown, killing Banquo and attempting to kill Fleance so Banquo's decendants will not inherit the crown, going to the witches for more predictions, asking the witches for information about Banquo's decendants (other answers may be acceptable.)
