Vocabulary Part 1
#1 A scientist who studies fossiles is a/an paleontoligist
#2 The place where an organism lives is called its habitat
#3 Each major division of the geologic time scale is a/an era
#4 An aniamal that goes into a deep sleep which helps it survive the winter is said to hibernte

Adaptation/Extinction Part 3
#1 A butterfly has markings on its wings that resemble owl eyes. The markings are an example of mimicry
#2 Organisms that produce living things of the same kind belong to the same group called a/an species
#3 A desert is a dry place.. Is this an example of a niche? no
#4 Raccoons eat berries... Is this an example of a niche? yes
#5 Does a paleontologist make fossils? no
Deep Thinking...
#1 A Paleontologist concludes a dinosaur ate plants.. How do you know? He might observe the dino had flat, dull teeth, and no claws. The dino could have a long neck to reach leaves.
#2 Compare Camouflage and mimicry They are both adaptations to animals apperance without being seen. Camouflage helps an animal blend end and mimicry makes an animal look like a plant or other animal.
#3 Two birds: One eats nuts other berries..One eats mice other rabbits. Do they share the same niche? No, the birds have different niches because one is a herbivore and other is a carnivore.
#4 Give 2 examples of how a bee and a sea slug adapt to protect themselves.. Bee-bright colors to warn predators; sea slug- its camouglage helps it hide from predators
#5 How will an ecosystem change if an animal that eats insects becomes extinct? Insects would increase because there wouldn't be an animal to eat them and the insects could eat up other animals food sources causing animals to starve.
Think about at dam....
#1 A dam is built for what? To stop flooding
#2 Once the dam is built it controls floods; how is this helpful to animals? Creates new habitat for animals
#3 How is the dam harmful to animals? Could destory an other animals habitat downstream from having less water.
#4 HOw is the dam harmful to people? The dam could force people to move homes.
